Distinguished and Famous people from Marion
🍇 Giovanni Patritti
Giovanni Patritti left his Piedmontese village in 1925 and established a winery at Dover Gardens the following year. The family continued making wine at that suburban site as the surrounding district changed. It is an appealingly unexpected address for a working winery: cellars and production sit within metropolitan Adelaide rather than in a remote vineyard landscape. Later generations maintained the business, while the family also developed arrangements to care for historic vineyards within the City of Marion. His legacy is a local enterprise linking Italian migration, practical winemaking and the survival of agricultural activity among suburban streets.
🏊 Kyle Chalmers
Kyle Chalmers’s swimming career includes a substantial connection with Marion Swimming Club. His breakthrough on the Olympic stage came with the 100-metre freestyle title at Rio in 2016, followed by further individual and relay success. In 2023 he won his first individual world championship gold in the same event at Fukuoka. Marion belongs to the training and club chapter of that career, alongside his earlier South Australian clubs. The family’s sporting interests were not confined to the pool: his father Brett played Australian rules football, and Kyle has maintained an enthusiastic connection with Port Adelaide.
🎨 Sir Ivor Hele
Sir Ivor Hele was born at Edwardstown in 1912 and showed exceptional drawing ability as a child. Study in Adelaide, Paris and Munich led to a disciplined career in portraiture and figure painting. As an official war artist he worked in North Africa, New Guinea and Korea, adapting his colours and compositions to very different landscapes and conditions. He also won the Archibald Prize five times during the 1950s. Edwardstown is his birthplace; his later long-term studio was at Aldinga. The distinction matters in tracing a career that began in Adelaide’s southern suburbs and reached far beyond them.
